Nike EYBL Session 1 Scouting Notes

Over the weekend, RecruitTheBronx.com’s always-on-the-go scout, Dave Cordova shot down to the ESPN Wide World of Sports in Kissimmee, FL for the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League’s first session. The event included four of New York State’s finest AAU programs in the PSA Cardinals, the New York Rens, the New Heights Lightning and the Albany City Rocks in the 17U division. Here are the standouts from the weekend:

 

Gus Yalden, 6-8, Forward, Asheville School (NC), Albany City Rocks, Class of 2023 - A forward that is very dominant physically and has plenty of footwork. Is able to get to the basket with ease and uses his physicality to draw fouls and also to obtain rebounds. Is able to step out onto the perimeter and shoot from deep.

 

Elijah Gertrude, 6-3, Shooting Guard, Hudson Catholic High School (NJ), Albany City Rocks, Class of 2023 - A guard that has plenty of athleticism and loves to play above the rim. Is able to get to the basket and can make jumpers on the perimeter. Loves to run in the fast break and is able to anticipate passes on the break.


Trey Autry, 6-3, Shooting Guard, Western Reserve Academy (OH), Albany City Rocks, Class of 2023 - A guard that is always alert on the court and finds ways to get the ball. Has plenty of athleticism and loves to drive to the basket and is a good finisher at the hole. Finds a way to get his shot off efficiently from the perimeter.


Kayvaun Mulready, 6-4, Shooting Guard, Worcester Academy (CT), Albany City Rocks, Class of 2023 - A guard that loves to have the ball in his hands and can create for himself off the dribble at all times. Is good at staying on his defender and is very alert on the floor. Is very athletic and can get to the basket easily and loves to play above the rim.


Tobe Awaka 6-8, Forward, Cardinal Hayes High School, New Heights Lightning, Class of 2022 - A player that is a force in the post and is a good rebounder. Is able to put the ball on the floor and dominate in the paint area. Is able to put the ball on the floor and post up the opposition. Is great at finishing at the basket.


Tahaad Pettiford 6-2, Point Guard, Hudson Catholic High School (NJ), New Heights Lightning, Class of 2024 - A guard that is quick and deceptive on the floor and is able to do plenty on the floor. Knows when to take a shot and knows when to create for himself at all times. Is able to shoot from long range and is able to get past his defender with smooth moves to the basket.


Youssouf Singare 7-0, Center, Upper Room Christian School, New Heights Lightning, Class of 2023 - A forward that has great size and length and can find ways to hold his own in the paint area on both ends of the court. Is able to block shots on the defensive end and can get rebounds. Is a good finisher at the rim.


Akil Watson, 6-9, Forward, Roselle Catholic High School (NJ), New Heights Lightning, Class of 2023 - A forward that can get to the basket and is able to use his physicality to absorb contact at all times. Has good hands and uses that to make floaters and can shoot from the perimeter. Is able to finish whenever he gets to the basket.


Jason Rivera-Torres 6-6, Shooting Guard, Bishop Walsh School (MD), New Heights Lightning, Class of 2023 - A guard that has great court vision and is a good passer whenever he is on the perimeter. Is able to move to the basket and can score. Likes to get to stay onto whomever he is guarding and is prone to getting steals which turn into baskets on the opposite ends of the floor.


Christian Jones 6-4, Shooting Guard, Our Saviour Lutheran High School, New Heights Lightning, Class of 2023 - A guard that is always active and can be alert whenever he is on the floor. A player that can play above the rim and is very explosive when on the court. Is able to create for himself and is able to make smooth moves to the basket.


Mouhamed Dioubate 6-8, Forward, Putnam Science Academy (CT), PSA Cardinals, Class of 2023 - A forward that is very strong and is always good at attacking the boards. Is very physical in the post area and can be very explosive when going to the basket. Is able to handle the ball on the perimeter.


Jayden Reid  6-0, Point Guard, Long Island Lutheran High School, PSA Cardinals, Class of 2023 - A guard that has the ability to facilitate to his teammates and uses his speed to get downcourt. Is able to get to the basket strong and finish. Is able to take clutch shots whenever he has a chance.


Devin Vanterpool 6-4, Shooting Guard, Christ the King High School, PSA Cardinals, Class of 2023 - A guard that is very skilled and has plenty of good footwork and is able to attack the basket. Is great at anticipating passes and is able to create for himself off of the dribble. Has the ability to come off of a screen and roll to the basket afterwards. Is able to find his teammates and put them in position to score.

Diovion Middleton 6-5, Shooting Guard, Woodstock Academy (CT), PSA Cardinals, Class of 2023 - A guard that is able to create for himself off the dribble and finds multiple ways to get to the basket. Loves to drive to the hole and is able to get his shot off efficiently. Is able to put the ball on the floor and can make smooth moves.


Ty-laur Johnson 6-0, Point Guard, St. Benedict’s Preparatory School (NJ), NY Rens, Class of 2023 - A guard that is able to take over the game with his masterful play. Is very quick and is able to make dazzling moves when he has the ball in his hands. Is able to drive to the basket easily and is able to get his shot off from three-point range.


Christian Bliss 6-4, Shooting Guard, George School (PA), Class of 2024 - A guard that has great court vision and can bring the ball up the court and kick it out to whomever is on the perimeter. Is able to shoot from long range and can drive to the basket and finish. Is able to create for himself off the dribble.


Papa Kante, 6-10, Forward, South Kent School (CT), NY Rens, Class of 2023 - A forward that is very strong and is very mobile in the paint area. Has good hands and is able to play strong defense on the floor. Is able to block shots and obtain rebounds when in the low post. Has the ability to put the ball on the floor and has good footwork.


Aaron Clark, 6-6, Shooting Guard, Brewster Academy (NH), NY Rens, Class of 2023 - A guard that has the ability to drive to the basket and make smooth moves with his ball handling skills. Is able to step out on the perimeter and shoot from long range. Is very fearless when going up to the basket to score and is able to absorb contact.
