2017 MTG Playoffs

By Bret Wilson @brettwilson715

Recruit The Bronx continued our pre season high school coverage at the More Than a Game playoffs on Saturday, October 28. MTG is now in its third year for high school pre season action. With Under Armour giving some sponsorship, MTG also runs a competitive summer league. Rob Moses is the tournament director, and he also is the assistant basketball coach at Cardozo HS. Rob says he anticipates the high school pre season tournament getting bigger. There may be a move to increase the 16 team tournament to as many as 24 in future years. Here are the top performers from the first round playoff games:

Moussa Cisse 2021 6’11 center Christ The King - good motor. Lean and athletic player. Can dribble coast to coast when he is given the lane. Plays above the rim. Will deter and block shots. Needs to be stronger at the rim when attempting to finish in traffic.

Kofi Cockburn 2019 7’0 center Christ The King - 280lbs and solid. Power is his game. Physically strong. Can dominate the post with rebounds. Especially when he is aggressively going after the rebounds. Will protect the basket and block shots. Needs to develop a soft 10-15ft shot.

Shaun DeLeon 2018 5’6 point guard Bayside HS - good shooter. Knows how to free himself for his shot. Very crafty and shifty with his dribble. Needs to be a better defender.

Larry Moreno 2018 5’11 point guard Brooklyn Law - good 3pt shooter. Decent consistency with his shooting abilities. Can score the ball in bunch. Good passer. Needs to improve on his weak hand and the confidence to use his weak hand.

Brendan McGuire 2018 6’6 point forward Chaminade HS - good player. Plays the point forward but can very easily play the point guard position and perhaps should. Good with his dribble. Plays under control. Knows how to let the game come to him. Will stick his shots. Nice skilled player. Dependable at the free throw line. Needs to work on defending the ball one on one.

Johnny Francois 2018 6’1 guard Brooklyn Collegiate HS - good spot shooter. Will hit his fair share of 3pt shots. Works hard. Can dribble drive on occasion. Needs to shot the ball better off the dribble.

Teequan Holley 2019 6’6 forward John Bowne HS - decent around the basket. Long arms. Can be good around the basket. Runs rim to rim. Average rebounder. Needs to improve on some face up moves.

Victor Ogbo 2018 6’5 center - can rebound. Gets good positioning around the basket. Will back you down to the basket. Decent with shooting the ball over his shoulder with his strong hand. Needs more athletism added to his game.

Richard Selembo 2018 6’2 guard John Bowne HS - can finish at the basket. Likes to take the ball to the basket. Can be effective as a rebounder off the offensive glass giving his team second chance possessions. Needs to improve as a shooter.

Brandan Lewis 2018 6’2 guard Eagle Academy II Brooklyn - good in transition. Plays hard. Can finish with both hands. Needs to become a better shooter.
