2023 Team Long Island IS8 Player Profiles

The Team Long Island concept was developed by Ted Thomas, Editor of LongIslandBasketball.com. It is an honorary team put together to play in one event only - the IS8 tournament in Jamaica, Queens each year. (The players are otherwise free to play for any other grassroots team that they choose.) The idea for it came together when LongIslandBasketball.com was doing the research for the All-Long Island teams that they post annually, and wondered how good an All-Long Island team would be if it actually played.


The team is head coached by Roheen Oates and he is assisted by Thomas and Cedric Ellison. Below are the 2023 team’s players’ profiles:

 

KJ Anderson (2024) 6’6 wing, Massapequa High - A versatile and athletic forward that goes hard all the time, can score and rebound around the basket, and has a good midrange game.


Samir Bell (2023) 5’9 guard, Bellport High - Bell is a high scoring bucket getter that led Bellport’s Suffolk County’s AA tournament run and to a 16-4 record this winter.


Luke Cronin (2023) 6’8 forward, Great Neck North High (George Washington University commit) - A banger around the baskets that scores, rebounds, and blocks shots, he has good footwork, passes well out of the post, and can step out and hit a three.


Elijah Darby (2023) 6’8 forward, Freeport High - A raw and athletic talent that scores, rebounds, and blocks shots and is improving from game to game

 

David DeBusschere 6’0 guard, Chaminade High - A versatile all around player and a deadly three-point shooter that moves well without the ball, is an excellent passer, rebounds well, and plays hard nosed defense.

 

Nate Gordon (2023) 6’1 guard, Deer Park High - Fast and powerful, he can get to the basket or knock down a three and plays hard nosed defense.


Marcus Harris (2023) 6’5 small forward, Wyandanch High -  Harris loves to play both on the perimeter and the post area. He has a nice shooting touch, uses his body well in the low post and is able to get to the basket easily off the dribble.


Muneer Ibrahem (2023) 5’10 point guard, East Meadow High - A good distributor with a good handle, he is also a dangerous three point shooter and defends well.

 

Kazmin Johnson (2023) 6’4 small forward, Hampton Bays High - A long and lean inside and out scorer that blocks shots and rebounds well too

 

PJ Kellachan (2023) 6’8 forward, Chaminade High (University of Scranton University commit) - Kellachan is a shot blocking rim protector with a high motor and high work rate as an around the rim scorer.


Jakai Lester 6’6 forward, Wantagh High - A tough, high energy player that rebounds and defends well and turns rebounds and stops into points.

 

Dylan Mingo (2026) 6’3 guard, Long Island Lutheran - Dylan Mingo has already secured a D1 offer as a sophomore, and was an invitee to the latest USA Men’s Jr. National Team Mini Camp. He is a long, smooth, and quick guard that can score from all three levels. He uses both his tight handle and a quick first step to beat defenders. He has a sweet shot-release both off of the bounce or catch.


Kayden Mingo (2025) 6’2 point guard, Long Island Lutheran - Kayden Mingo is a tough guard who can attack the rack, shoot the ball, and lock you up defensively. He has been a significant contributor for the national powerhouse, Long Island Lutheran. He is on the radar of multiple Mid Majors.

 

Malachi Moore (2023) 6’4 guard, Copiague High - Moore is very strong and can finish at either hand around the rim. He has improved his 3 point shot which makes him a legit threat and can score it at all 3 levels. High academic schools are pursuing him and his 4.0 gpa abilities..


James Murphy (2023) 6’2 small guard, South Side High - One of Long Island’s best kept secrets. Murphy plays hard all of the time and can score inside or out. He sees the floor well and finds the open man. Good as both an on-ball defender and in helpd defense rotations.


Derek Reed (2023) 5’11 point guard, Southhampton High - A strong ballhandler, an excellent passer, and a hounding defender that can score from anywhere on the court.


Colin Strohm 6’5 small forward, Comsewogue High - A big, strong player that rebounds well and knocks down threes.

 

Aiden Swinson (2023) 6’4 guard, Bay Shore High - A strong and aggressive scorer and defender with a good handle that can go to the basket, knock down a jumper, and defend multiple positions.

 

Carter Wilson (2025) 6’0 guard, St Johns the Baptist High - A shifty and traditional point guard, Wilson is a heady quarterback who plays at a tremendous pace. His on-ball defensive tactics, ability to create and ability to pick his spots offensively ae all notable. He has a quick first step and can weave his way into traffic and score. Wilson also has an advanced skill to free up space for his jumper via the step back and pull-up.


Frank Wilson (2023) 6’5 small forward Hills West High - A strong and athletic jumping jack that reliably puts up big scoring, rebounding, and blocked shot numbers game after game.

 

Maksim Vukcevic (2023) 6’2 guard, Knox School - A versatile player that passes and handles the ball well, knocks down the three, and plays tough defense.
