New Rochelle High 2020-2021 Season Preview
New Rochelle High competes in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Section 1 which encompasses Dutchess, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester counties. Head Coach Rasaun Young says that after losing to Horace Greeley high in a Section 1 tournament semi final last season, that his guys are eager to get back on the court and back to the County Center (site of the Section tournament semis and finals).
Coach Young says that he has great leadership from his players, Jayson Mcghee (2020 All State) and Promise Opurum (2020 All Section) will lead the way along with seniors Jaheim Gregory and Breyon Williams.
Jayson Mcghee (2021) 6’1 point guard. Last season, Mcghee averaged 17.6 pts 5.9 asst and 5 rb. He is a super-competitive leader with a high basketball IQ. He is very explosive in attacking the basket, scores in bunches and loves to pass. He can shoot the 3 ball and has a nice pull-up game. He is starting to receive interest from D1 schools.
Promise Opurum (2021) 6’7 power forward. Opurum is a high academic student who is receiving D1 interests from Ivy League schools. He plays both ends of the court and avaergaed 3.5 blks per game last year. Opurum plays above the rim, runs the floor and can finish plays. Coach Young says that he has a BIG upside will draw more interest as more d1 coaches see him play.
Jaheim Gregory (2021) 6’3 guard. Gregory is New Rochelle’s best-kept secret. He started games as a Sophomore, but was sidelined last year as a junior due to a football injury. He is a super-athletic slasher who attacks the basket strongly. He has a nice pull-up jump shoot and loves to defend the other team’s best player. Coach Young is looking for a break out year for him.
Breyon Williams (2021) 6’5 forward. Last year was a learning experience for Williams. He has raw talent, is athletic and can run the floor. He blocks shots and can finish. Coach Young is pushing him to become stronger in order to maximize his impact on the game. needs to get stronger.
