The Team Next Up basketball team runs an 18U Varsity High School squad, competing passionately within the vibrant New York City basketball scene. With a local focus on tournaments held in Brooklyn, Harlem, The Bronx, and New Jersey, the team showcases their talents while embracing the rich basketball culture of the area.


The team’s commitment to excellence is palpable, evident in their 15-4 record during this summer’s competitions. With dedication, discipline, and a shared ambition, these athletes have honed their skills, enhanced their chemistry, and solidified their identity as a formidable force within the basketball community.


Operating under the banner of the Next Up Non Profit, the Team Next Up initiative is a testament to the power of community support. Guided by a mission to empower young talents, the team does not burden its players with fees, recognizing the challenges that stem from low-income backgrounds. Through this inclusive approach, Team Next Up demonstrates that the pursuit of basketball excellence is open to all, transcending financial barriers. Their mission is to provide a stepping stone for each student-athlete’s path to college by nurturing their athletic prowess and instilling core values that extend far beyond the court.


The team is coached by Moustapha Mbaye, and below are the player profiles from his 2023 summer team:



Tyler Fraser (2023) 6’3, 180 lbs guard (University of Maine commit) - Fraser is a versatile two-way player with a strong defensive presence. He can effectively guard multiple positions on the court. His ability to contribute on both ends of the floor makes him a valuable asset to any team. Fraser’s defensive skills, combined with his offensive capabilities, make him an intriguing prospect for college programs seeking a player who can impact the game on multiple levels.



Mourtalla “Malik” Mbaye (2023) 6’3, 205 lbs guard, Eagle Academy Harlem (Clarion University commit) - Mbaye is a high IQ player who excels in both scoring and facilitating. Leading in scoring and assists for his team, he demonstrates the ability to read the game and make intelligent decisions. Mbaye is poised to continue his basketball journey at the collegiate level, bringing his basketball IQ and all-around skills to the court.



Joshua Caleb Ramharak (2024) 6’6, 190 lbs Christ The King High - Ramharak is a versatile defender with the ability to guard multiple positions. Excelling in help defense situations, he also operates well around the mid-range area. His athleticism and defensive instincts position him to transition smoothly into college basketball and contribute on both ends of the floor.


Wylik Coleman (2024) 6’0, 150 lbs, guard - Coleman, an all-state selection with a shifty 3-level scoring ability, stands out as a skilled combo guard. His versatility on the offensive end, combined with his shiftiness, makes him a dynamic player on the court. With his reclassification to the 2024 class and commitment to improvement, Coleman is actively seeking prep opportunities to further elevate his game.



Andrew Hutchinson Jr (2024) 6’6,  215 lbs, RockTop Academy (PA) - Hutchinson is a high-energy forward known for his attacking style and commitment to defense. Possessing the size and energy to impact both ends of the court, he is committed to RockTop Academy. Hutchinson Jr’s potential and work ethic make him a prospect to watch. His athleticism and defensive prowess position him as an asset to any college program.

 


Saliou Ndiaye (2024) 6’6, 175 lbs, Eagle Academy Harlem - Ndiaye is a defensive-minded forward who also boasts solid shooting skills. Standing at 6’6”, he can contribute on both ends of the floor. Already attracting D2 interest, Ndiaye’s defensive abilities and shooting prowess make him a well-rounded prospect with the potential to make a significant impact at the collegiate level.



Moudou Diakhate (2024) 6’2, 140 lbs guard, High School for Math Science and Engineering - Diakhate is an athletic combo guard known for his ball-handling skills. Possessing the physical tools to excel as a guard, his athleticism and ball-handling abilities make him an intriguing prospect for college programs looking for dynamic backcourt players.



Davell Walton (2025) 5’9, 140 lbs guard, Liberation High School - Walton is a flashy point guard known for his ability to push the ball and attack in the mid-range area. Despite his height, Walton’s skills and attacking mentality make him an exciting young guard with the potential to excel both in high school and potentially at the collegiate level.



Tarrell Sumlin (2025) 6’5, 245 lbs center, APR High School - Sumlin is an energetic center known for his motor and defensive capabilities. With strong finishing skills around the rim, he presents a strong defensive presence. As he continues to develop his skills, Sumlin’s potential and energy make him a player to watch for scholarship opportunities in the future.



Xavier Madourie (2024) 6’5, 240 lbs forward,  Brooklyn Law & Tech High - Madourie, a big man with good size, has the potential to contribute with skill development. His size combined with continued improvement can enable him to carve out a role on the college level.



Jahcure Lawrence (2023) 6’3, 185 lbs guard, (Voorhees University commit) - Lawrence is a lockdown defender and a capable finisher. Lawrence is set to bring his defensive prowess and finishing abilities to the collegiate level, making him a valuable asset to his future team.



Alex Hattel (2024) 6’2,  188 lbs guard - Hattel is a dedicated guard with a strong work ethic and reliable shooting skills. His commitment to improvement and his shooting ability make him an attractive prospect for college coaches seeking players with a solid skill foundation. Additionally, Hattel is actively seeking prep opportunities to further develop his game and enhance his prospects for collegiate basketball.



Edison Hernandez Xavier Gomez (2024) 6’3, 215 lbs small forward, Union City High School (NJ) - Gomez is a versatile forward with strong defensive skills and the ability to attack the basket. He thrives on the challenge of guarding the opposing team’s best offensive player, showcasing his commitment to both ends of the court. After a strong summer, Gomez is poised to make a significant impact during his high school season as he competes for Union City High School in New Jersey. With his defensive prowess and offensive versatility, he is certainly a college prospect to watch.



Kenyatta Carpenter
(2026) 5’10, 155 lbs point guard, Eagle Academy Harlem - Carpenter is a point guard with strong shooting abilities. Despite being the youngest member of his team, he showcases remarkable effort on defense and a knack for getting to his preferred spots on the court. He has shown the necessary skills and tools to have a successful high school career and a promising future in collegiate basketball.
