2023 Dave Edwards Memorial Classic Standouts

On October 7, we paid a visit to the Elmcor Adult and Youth Activities Center in the Corona section of Queens for the third annual Dave Edwards Memorial Classic. The event which is brought to us by Elmcor and the Lincoln Park Classic. The showcase is now in its third year of existence, and again, it pitted some of the best teams in the Tri-state area against each other in preseason exhibition games. On this date, we got to see the final two games of the day between Eagle Academy II (PSAL) and St. Francis Prep (CHSAA) and the finale between Our Saviour Lutheran (independent) and South Shore High (PSAL). Here are the standouts from both games:


Ahmed Ibrahim 6-7, Eagle Academy II, Class of 2024 - A forward that is strong and agile and uses powerful moves to operate around the basket. Is a player that can run the floor and is a good finisher around the basket. Has plenty of energy and can do plenty of things on the court, including passing the ball to his teammates and putting them in position to score at all times.


Mangok Lok 6-6, Forward, Eagle Academy II, Class of 2024 - A forward that has good hands and is very active on both ends of the court. Is fearless on the boards and has great size and hands, which aid him in the low post. Has the ability to dominate in the post area, as he is prone to throwing down powerful dunks.


Jakai Sanders 6-3, Point Guard, Eagle Academy II, Class of 2024 - A guard that has the ability to make his presence felt at all times on the court. Has the ability to execute on the offensive end, as he is able to drive to the basket & shows his athleticism when going to the rim. Is able to beat his man off the dribble and can attack in transition. Is able to find his teammates whether on the fast break or when his teammate is open.


Tyler Michel 6-4, Shooting Guard, St. Francis Preparatory High School, Class of 2024 - A guard with plenty of energy on the court at all times. Is a player that has a deadly jumper from the perimeter and can attack the basket at all times. Loves to cut off of a pick & roll and can screen to the basket.


Vere Anthony 6-0, Point Guard, St. Francis Preparatory High School, Class of 2024 - A guard that has the ability to run a team and can make great plays at all times. Has a nice jumper and is able to drive into the lane for a pull-up floater and can finish at the basket. Is able to find his teammates at the right moments & can put them in position to score.


Dellquan Warren 6-1, Point Guard, Our Saviour Lutheran High School, Class of 2024 - A guard that is very explosive and likes to show his ability to make plays on the court. Is able to shoot from long range and is a very athletic player on both ends of the court. Is able to play strong defense on his man and will force the opposition into giving up the ball, which leads to him getting a steal and then either going to the basket or dishing it out to a teammate.


Solomon Ominu 6-9, Forward, Our Saviour Lutheran High School, Class of 2024 - A forward that is a strong presence in the low post that can deny the opposition the ball and can be a huge asset for his team. Is able to explode and finish at the rim when on the offensive end. Is fearless when it comes to obtaining rebounds at all times.


Sincere Folk 6-0, Point Guard, South Shore High School, Class of 2026 - A guard that is very quick and likes to run in transition on the fast break. Is able to play tough defense and is able to force his teammates into giving up the ball so that he can get a steal. Has a penchant for being a distributor, setting his teammates up for opportunities to score.


Asher Elson 6-9, Forward, South Shore High School, Class of 2025 - A forward that is long and agile and is able to use his length to snare rebounds and be efficient in the post area. Is able to put the ball on the floor and can finish at the basket when going up for a dunk. Has great hands, which also aid in him blocking shots on the defensive end.


Shamari Mitchell 6-7, Forward, South Shore High School, Class of 2025 - A forward that is a very high-energy player and is a force on both ends of the court. Is able to attack the glass and loves to run down court on both ends. Is a great finisher when throwing down a powerful dunks. Has the ability to block shots when on the defensive end.
