Greenwich Country Day School is a co-educational, independent day school in Greenwich, CT 39 miles from New York City. Its most famous basketball alum, to date, is NBA All Star, Donovan “Spida” Mitchell. The boys varsity basketball team is coached by former college head coach, Pat Scanlon, who also teaches history at the school. The program has been on a steady rise since he took over five years ago. They look to build further from last year’s 16-10 squad that made it to the Fairchester Athletic Association finals.  They also compete in the college-bound player rich NEPSAC Class B. Their Key 2023-24 players are profiled below:

John Berbano (2024) 6’1 lead guard - Berbano might be the most improved player on the roster. His work ethic is second to none. He has improved his all-around game and will be a primary contributor on offense and defense. Berbano will be one of the leaders, on and off the court. He is being recruited by high-academic D3’s. 4.0 gpa

Calder Truesdale (2024) 6’0 guard (Wesleyan University commit) - Truesdale will be playing his fifth year in the GCDS program and has been a starter for the last two seasons.  He is a disruptive defender often ranking high in deflections and steals.  He is also a strong cutter, driver and shooter.  He is a leader.  Calder has committed to Wesleyan for soccer.

Jesse Ripka (2024) 6’0 guard - Ripka will be playing his fifth year in the program and has been a key role player in all of those years.  A deadly shooter who has developed his all-around game. He plays bigger than he is using his strength and toughness. He is the starting quarterback and will play football in college.

Taj Walters (2025) 6’5 lead guard - Walters was All-NEPSAC in his first year with GCDS and has only improved his all-around game.  He is one of the best around at getting in the paint where he can finish and pass at a high level.  He has improved his shot thanks to a dedicated work ethic.  He is a terrific rebounder and also can guard 1-5. Walter holds offers from A-10, MAC, CAA and Big South schools and he expect many more to come.

Griffyn Flood (2025) 6’4 guard/forward - Flood returns after playing as a sophomore last year. He is a skilled and versatile player with size who is expected to play a larger role this season. Flood is a terrific lacrosse player and is being recruited at the highest levels of that sport.

Charles Branch (2026) 5’11 guard - Branch was a key contributor to the JV last year and is expected to play a large role on varsity this year. He has worked very hard on developing his game. He is a tough, physical all-around player who has a knack for rebounding and getting out in transition.

Rowan Introzzi (2026) 6’5 forward/guard - Introzzi joins GCDS this year and is expected to play a valuable role.  He is a versatile player with the ability to drive, finish, pass and shoot. He is strong and uses his body well to get in the paint and finish. He is also a strong rebounder. College programs should keep a close eye on him.

Mekai Brown (2027), 6’7 forward/guard - Brown is a very talented player with a strong work ethic.  He is able to do a lot of things at his height, especially scoring the basketball in a variety of ways. He has potential to be a terrific defender. He is a big time prospect and already garnering interest from Division I programs.
