In 1994, the New York City Department of Education sponsored the first systemic effort to redesign a large high school in the Bronx. Wings Academy was one of five pioneering small schools resulting from that effort, founded on the premise of helping young people use their minds well.  Their boys basketball team competes in the Manhattan/Bronx AAAA Division. Former assistant coach Mike Salvatore is stepping into the head coaching role, starting this season. Below are the key players that he will be relying on:

Josmar Acevado (2024) 6’2 wing – Acevado is the team leader. He is a solid shooter, looking to expand his all around game. He is a great rebounder for his size. Needs to be more selfish. 3.9 gpa

Mohamed Bah (2025) 6’2 wing – Bah is a physical player who plays bigger than his height would indicate. He can play inside or out. He is the best rebounder on the team. Strong at attacking the basket. He is a good mid-range shooter that is working on extending his range.

Justin Genao (2025) guard – Genao is a transfer from St. Raymonds High. A quick guard that can score in bunches. He can and will shoot the ball from deep, and is steadily improving his shot selection. He is also an improving defender and rebounder.

Rushawn Greene (2025) 5’10 point guard – Greene is a transfer from Cardinal Hayes High. He is the fastest player on the team. Greene has a deadly pull-up jumper and is steadily increasing his range. Excellent on-ball defender.

Bryan Mercedes (2024) 6’4 small forward – Mercedes is a transfer from Longwood Prep. A strong, versatile wing who is just as comfortable around the basket as he is from the outside. He has a high basketball IQ and is a natural leader

.
Jamel Zellner (2024) 6’1 guard – A 3 level scorer coming off a knee injury that shortened his junior year. Now he is a strong senior who uses his strength to make plays.
