Bedford High School is a public school located on Bedford Avenue in Brooklyn. It serves 381 students in grades 9-12. Its boys varsity basketball team competes in Division AAA - Brooklyn III


The team is coached by a New York City scoring legend, Robert Phelps. Phelps led the city in scoring at Nazareth High in 1990 (he is 11th all time in scoring in New York State history with 2,477 points) and earned a scholarship to Providence College, helping the Friars win the Big East Tournament in 1994.

 

Below, we profile the key players on the 2023-24 Bedford Academy team.


Wayne Best (2024) 6’2 guard - Best is recognized for his extraordinary dedication and work ethic. His relentless improvement has made him a master of the midrange game, rendering him an incredibly effective scorer.


Josh Naklen (2024) 5’9 point guard - Naklen has been a varsity standout for three years, leading the team in both points and assists. As a point guard, he brings dynamic energy to the Panthers. He is known for his dunking abilities, relentless attacks on the basket, and a formidable midrange jumper. His skill extends to sinking three-pointers off the dribble, adding to his versatility.


Kerri Cunningham (2024) 6’5 small forward - Cunningham has transferred in from Nazareth High. He is focused and determined. He excels in rebounding and demonstrates impressive footwork. His passion for the game is evident, along with his coachability and a reliable midrange jumper.


Dakota Harrison (2025) 6’0 point guard - Harrison is the team captain, and he exemplifies leadership. In his second year, Harrison impresses with his consistent play, defensive prowess, and sharp three-point shooting. His academic excellence, with pairs with his basketball skills to suggest a future full of possibilities. 96 gpa


Kai Kudovault (2025) 6’1 guard - Kudovault known as Mr. Hustle. His energy and versatility make him a key utility player. His remarkable speed and agility are complemented by strong defensive skills. Kai’s unselfish play and effective communication are also hallmarks of his style.


Robert Phelps, Jr. (2025) 6’5 small forward -  The coach’s son and namesake transferred in from Christ The King. Basketballwise, he is exploring his varied talents as a point forward. Reminiscent of Lamar Odom, Robert’s smooth left-hand jumper, ball-handling, and high basketball IQ have caught the attention of college scouts, who see significant potential in his future.
