2024 CHSAA A and B Intersectional Championship Standouts

On Friday night, March 1, the place to be was the Rose Hill Gym on the campus of Fordham University in The Bronx for the Catholic High School Athletic Association intersectional championship games for the A and B Divisions.  Both games provided plenty of great action. In the first game, Regis High School (Upper East Side, Manhattan) would go on to beat St. John’s Preparatory School (Astoria, Queens) 56-44 in the B championship game. In the second game, Monsignor McClancy Memorial High School (East Elmhurst, Queens) would knock off Fordham Preparatory School (The Bronx) 69-60 in the A championship game.


As a result of both teams winning, Regis High and Monsignor McClancy advance to the CHSAA Catholic state championship games for their respective classifications next week, where they will play schools from either Long Island or upstate New York.


Here are the standouts from the games:

 

Brendan O’Keefe 5-10, Point Guard, Regis High School, Class of 2024 - A guard that has the ability to be a playmaker and is able to score in bunches. Is a player that can shoot from three-point range and finds many ways to get to the basket. Provides plenty of energy to his team and is the engine that keeps his team going. Is able to distribute the ball to his teammates.


Austin Mejia 6-2,  Wing, Regis High School, Class of 2024 - A forward that is very athletic and gives maximum effort every time he is on the floor for his team. Is able to obtain rebounds and is able to attack in transition. Is able to put the ball on the floor and drive to the basket and if not contained will find a way to dominate against the opposition.


Alex Sepe, 6-4, Forward, Regis High School, Class of 2024 - A forward that is very athletic and does not hesitate to show off his vertical leap whenever the ball hits the rim or the backboard. Is able to drive to the basket and is a good finisher. Also has a nice shooting touch, as he is able to step out on the perimeter and shoot jumpers.


Ryan Edwards, 6-3, Shooting Guard, St. John’s Preparatory High School, Class of 2026 - A guard that has the ability to make an impact on the game with his offensive ability. Is able to dish the ball to teammates that are on the move and when they’re open. Likes to drive to the basket and has a nice shooting touch from long range.

 

Patrick Rouse 6-3, Shooting Guard St. John’s Preparatory High School, Class of 2025 - A guard that has a long wingspan and has the ability to play the off-guard spot and the wing spot. Has the ability to obtain rebounds and then run downcourt. Has the ability to be a spot-up shooter on the perimeter and also shows off his athletic ability on the offensive end, whether finishing through contact and also getting to the rim.


Will Gregory 6-4, Shooting Guard, Fordham Preparatory School, Class of 2024 (Vassar College commit) - A guard that has plenty of skills and is a major offensive threat on the court for his team every time he takes the court. Is a three-point threat, who is willing to trust his own instincts when he feels that the shot is the right one to take. Is able to drive to the basket with ease and is a good finisher.


Matthew Kapfer 6-5, Forward, Fordham Preparatory High School, Class of 2024 - A skilled forward that is able to put the ball on the floor and is able to move around on the offensive end. Is the team’s dominant rebounder and is always alert when the shot goes up. Is able to score efficiently and looks to get tap-ins when the opportunity presents itself.


James Rosales 5-9, Point Guard, Monsignor McClancy High School, Class of 2024 - A guard that has the ability to make big plays on the court. Has a nice shooting touch and can be deadly from three-point range if not heavily-guarded. Is able to use his speed to get downcourt easily. Is also a great defender that is able to stay in front of his man and force them into turning the ball over.


Carlos Urena 5-10, Point Guard, Monsignor McClancy High School, Class of 2024 - A guard that has the ability to be a huge offensive threat for his team at all times. Is able to move around off the ball and find ways to catch and shoot and also drive to the basket. Is able to distribute the ball to his teammates when they’re around the basket or open on the perimeter.


Jaidenblake Gaston 6-0, Shooting Guard, Monsignor McClancy High School, Class of 2024 - A guard that can be effective on the court and is able to help his team in many ways. Is a player that can hold his own defensively and is known for getting steals and also blocking shots. Is able to go to the basket and finish in transition.
