Mount Saint Michael Academy is an all-boys’ Catholic high school in the Wakefield neighborhood of the New York City borough of the Bronx. Their varsity basketball team competes in the historically talent-loaded Catholic High School Athletic Association AA division. The team is head coached by 35 year veteran, Thomas Fraher. The Associate Head Coach is Jose Irizarry.

This year’s Varsity roster is dominated by a core of young players (1 freshman, 6 sophomores, 4 juniors and 1 senior). Drew Diaz, Shane Lopez and Supreme Hinton are returning starters from last year’s team that went 10-16. The younger, inexperienced players will need to pick up things quickly to jell and compete in the highly talented CHSAA AA league.

The 2026-26 team’s players are profiled below.

Drew Diaz (2026) 6’2 guard - Diaz is an experienced player who can make open shots anywhere on the floor. Last year, he was second on the team in scoring averaging just over 10 points per game, while leading the team in 3’s made. He handles the ball well and sees the floor. He’s going to be counted on to lead this young, inexperienced group of players. Also, an 85% free throw shooter. Ranked #2 academically in this year’s senior class.

Supreme Hinton (2028) 6’4 small forward - Hinton is clearly one of the better sophs in the city. He is a strong, talented player who finishes at the rim with authority and can rebound it with anyone. He sees the floor and has put lots of time in the gym to improve his shooting. Hinton is a player who can play on the wing and on the post. Has great hands and a strong desire to win. There’s no doubt he will attract double teams so he’s got to be willing to kick it to open players. Defensively, he can guard the ball and the post because of his desire and strength. Just needs to stay on the floor by not picking up ill-advised fouls.

Shane Lopez (2028) 5’10 point guard - Lopez is another young player that has varsity experience as he started 25 out of 26 games as a freshman. This quick PG has an uncanny ability to get in the lane and create scoring options for everyone. He’s solid in the pick n roll and continues to improve his shooting. A solid on ball defender who has active hands, which leads to deflections and steals. Needs to continue to get stronger, and he will, as he spends lots of time in the weight room. Honor Roll Student.

Derek Lugo (2028) 6’3 guard - Lugo is a shooting guard with the ability to put it on the floor and make open shots. Needs to continue to improve his defense and rebounding. A solid passer who can get in the lane and finish over smaller defenders. Also, a solid free throw shooter.

Dabra Kio-Amieyeofori (2028) 6’6 small forward - Kio-Amieyeofori is a versatile player who can play outside and inside. Dabra is a spot up shooter who also can score it off of the bounce. He’s a quick, athletic player who will be relied on to defend guards and post players across the league, and has to rebound consistently. His passing needs to improve. Solid from the stripe. If he plays both ends of the floor the entire time he’s out there, he could be a double-double machine.

Kayleeb George (2027) 6’6 forward - George’s biggest strength is his ability to protect the rim. Has great timing to block shots. Very quick off of his feet. Needs to get stronger and focus on catching the ball so he can finish at the rim. Rebounds it well on both ends. Shooting and finishing around the basket needs to improve.

Mohamed Doumbia (2029) 6’2 guard - Doumbia is a strong, physical on-ball defender who can spot up and make shots. He’s still learning the pace and speed of the varsity game but continues to make strides every day. He wants to be good. A regular in the weight room. Just needs to adapt to the speed of the game and other parts of his offense will come. Huge upside.

Vaughn Vasquez (2028) 6’2 guard - Vasquez is a solid defender with a strong, mature body. He stays in front of the ball and creates havoc for ball handlers. Has a knack to score the ball going to the rim or making 3’s. He will stretch the defense because he has to be guarded at long range. He is another young, inexperienced player learning on the fly.

Alberto Laporte (2027) 5’11 point guard - Laporte is a backup PG who works hard and continues to improve. Strong defender and a better than average shooter. Honor Roll Student.

Owen Thompson (2027) 6’1 guard - Thompson is a wing player who understands the game from all angles. Plays tenacious defense and always looks to set up other players. An Honor Roll student every year.
