The Frederick Gunn School is a private, coeducational boarding and day prep school serving grades 9-12 and postgraduates on a 220-acre campus in Washington, CT, bordering the village green in the Litchfield Hills. Founded in 1850 by Frederick Gunn - a teacher, abolitionist, Underground Railroad conductor. The school was known as The Gunnery until its 2020 renaming. It enrolls roughly 330 students, about 245 of them boarders living in one of 10 dormitories, with the remainder commuting. The student-teacher ratio is 6:1.

The Gunn boys’ basketball program routinely sends its best players on to play college basketball, and it annually vies for a seed in the New England Prep School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) Class B (mid-sized schools) postseason tournament. The commitment is real: a six-day weekly regimen, a 24-game schedule, required strength and conditioning and film study, and holiday tournament play.

The team is coached by Dr. Brian Konik, who also serves as the school’s Director of Counseling. A psychologist with more than 20 years working with adolescent and young adult students, and he spent time with the Naval Academy basketball program. That background shapes the program: alongside conventional preparation, Gunn incorporates sports psychology and mindfulness training, and builds team culture through exercises including a fall camping trip.
